Meta's AI agent vs a custom chatbot: what it really costs
Meta's AI agent for WhatsApp is not free: since August 1, 2026, Meta bills it per token, about 4 to 5 cents per message. And since October 1 it charges for service messages again, with 1,000 free per month that do not cover its own agent. Here is Meta's official table, the math against a custom chatbot, and the question that actually decides: what the bot needs to be able to answer.
Short answer
Meta's AI agent (Meta Business Agent) has been billed through the API since August 1, 2026: USD 2 per million tokens, which Meta says works out to about 4 to 5 US cents per message. It is charged even inside the free window opened by Click to WhatsApp ads.
Since October 1, 2026, Meta also charges again for service messages, the ones a person or a third-party AI writes, with 1,000 free per month per number. That free tier does not cover Meta’s agent: each message is charged in a single category.
The price per message is not what decides. What decides is what the bot has to answer: if opening hours, catalog and FAQs are enough, Meta’s agent can work. If the answer depends on real stock, the status of an order or your management system, you need an agent connected to that system.
What Meta publishes
The dates and the rate, as they appear in Meta's official pricing documentation.
| Date | What changes |
|---|---|
| July 1, 2026 | Meta launches the Meta Business Agent Platform: any partner or directly integrated business can connect through APIs |
| August 1, 2026 | Meta starts charging all businesses for Meta Business Agent messages, invoiced monthly |
| October 1, 2026 | Meta charges for service messages again (free since November 2024), with 1,000 free per month per number |
| October 1, 2026 | Meta charges for utility messages sent as replies within the 24-hour customer service window (free since July 2025) |
The agent rate is one global rate: USD 2 per million tokens. You pay for the tokens used to read the customer’s message and generate the reply, so a short answer costs less than a long one. This is the example Meta gives:
| Interaction | Messages to the customer | Tokens | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple inquiry ("At what time do you open?") | 4 | ~80,000 (~20,000 per message) | ~16 to 20 US cents |
| Complex interaction (step-by-step help with an assembly) | 10 | ~250,000 (~25,000 per message) | ~40 to 50 US cents |

Meta's own comparison
10,000 AI-powered replies to customers in Brazil.
| Service, simple AI | Service, complex AI | Meta Business Agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI cost | ~2 cents per message | ~9 cents per message | Included in the Meta charge |
| Message delivery | 0.68 cents per message | 0.68 cents per message | ~4 to 5 cents per message, a single charge |
| Total per message | ~2 to 3 cents | ~9 to 10 cents | ~4 to 5 cents |
| For 10,000 messages | ~USD 268 | ~USD 968 | ~USD 400 to 500 |
The first two columns are service messages answered by a third-party AI. Their costs are Meta's estimates, and delivery uses Brazil's rate. In your country, the service rate is the same as that market's utility and authentication rate, listed in Meta's rate cards.
The table charges delivery for all 10,000 service messages. With the free tier in place since October 1, the first 1,000 per month and per number do not pay for delivery. Meta's agent does not get that discount.
When Meta's agent is enough and when it is not
If your questions are opening hours, location, catalog and FAQs
It can be enough. According to its official page, it is trained on your past chats, your website or your catalog, and in the WhatsApp Business app you turn it on from Tools. It is available to eligible businesses in select markets.
If volume is low
At 4 or 5 cents per message, 1,000 agent replies are about USD 40 to 50 in tokens per month. That is math with Meta's rate, not a real invoice.
If the answer depends on your system
Real stock, today's price, order status, an invoice. The official page of Meta's agent does not mention connecting to an ERP or your own system: that takes an agent connected to that system.
If volume is high or conversations are long
Per-token billing has no monthly cap: the longer the reply, the more it costs. A flat subscription sets the cap up front.
The math against a custom chatbot
With Vozia, our WhatsApp chatbot, which has published pricing.
| Meta's AI agent (API) | Vozia | |
|---|---|---|
| How the AI is billed | Per token: USD 2 per million, about 4 to 5 cents per message | Subscription from USD 200 per month, up to 3,000 conversations, no token charges |
| Meta delivery charge | Included in the Meta Business Agent charge | Service message: 1,000 free per month per number, then your country’s rate |
| Inside the free ad window | Still charged | Delivery is free |
| What it answers with | Your past chats, your website or your catalog | Your catalog and spreadsheets, plus your system: live stock and price, order status, invoice |
| How it gets started | From the app, or through the API with a provider | USD 1,000 launch setup (list USD 1,800); the connection to your system is quoted separately |
The break-even point is math, not data
USD 200 divided by 4.5 cents is about 4,400 Meta agent messages per month. Below that, Meta's tokens cost less than the subscription; above it, the flat subscription wins. For Vozia, add the service messages above 1,000 per month. And the comparison only holds if both can answer the same thing: if your customer asks about stock and the bot cannot see it, no price per message is cheap.
When the bot needs to see your system
The case we built Vozia for.
We built Vozia, an AI agent for WhatsApp that answers with the real data of the business instead of a script or whatever it last read in an old chat. Everything below is published on its landing page:
Stock, orders and invoices from your system
Queries stock and price in real time, reports order status and sends the invoice. Today it connects to Mercado Libre, Tiendanube, Gmail and Outlook; your ERP or another system is quoted per system.
Live data
Fix a price in your list or your Google Sheet and the bot answers with the new number in the next conversation.
Hands off to the right person
A sensitive complaint, a special price or something it does not know: it passes the conversation on by topic and time of day, with full context.
Flat price, no token charges
From USD 200 per month with up to 3,000 conversations. Meta per-message charges are separate and the same with any provider.
If your system is an ERP, how to integrate AI with your ERP covers what gets connected and how.
Vozia
A chatbot that answers with the stock and orders in your system
Queries live stock and price, reports order status, hands off to a person when it should, and charges a flat subscription, no tokens.
